Mirrors – Should infants see their reflection in them ?

Myths,Posts

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the cutest (inaccurate, but more appropriate) of them all?

The Evil Queen – Snow White

The beliefs/superstitions

  1. Past Births: Babies remember their past births, and this has an ill effect on their psyche.
  2. Illnesses: A host of illnesses ranging from toothaches to tummy aches are attributed to babies looking at their reflections in mirrors.

The facts

  • Human Faces: Babies prefer human faces, their mother’s, their father’s, and other family members’ faces and their own too!
  • Identity: The infant constantly explores the environment, learning about new things and people. At the core of this knowledge lies the relationship to one’s self. Looking at oneself in mirrors helps foster this sense of identity.
  • Development: A mirror helps the baby focus, track images and promote social and emotional development.

How can you help?

  • Fix an unbreakable mirror to the side of your baby’s crib and let the baby have some ‘mirror time’!

We had recently conducted a poll among parents of infants at our clinic and the results were revealing.
